Terms of Service
- You make a contract with Motto Marine International, the company that runs Gangway. Payments are taken by Paddle.com, our reseller and merchant of record.
- The Service is open to businesses and individuals. Each plan has its own limits; Data API plans have a number of credits a month and a speed limit.
- If you buy as a consumer, you keep the rights consumer law gives you, including a 14-day right to withdraw in the EU, EEA, UK and Switzerland (see our Refund Policy).
- You may use the answers in your own work and show them to your own users, with the credits each answer carries. You may not pass on raw positions or tracks as data, or build a competing AIS data service from them.
- AIS data can be late, missing or wrong. The API is not an aid to navigation.
- Reports are made automatically from AIS data. No person reviews them and they are not expert opinion.
1. Who we are
Gangway AIS is run by Motto Marine International, a société à responsabilité limitée (SARL) with a share capital of €500, registered in France under SIREN 941 627 929 at the RCS of Dunkerque. Registered office: 14 Rue de Furnes, 59122 Hondschoote, France. VAT number: FR38941627929. Legal representative: Erdem Yuca, gérant.
In these terms "we" and "us" mean Motto Marine International. "You" means the business or person who opens an account. You reach us at hello@gangway.app.
These terms are the agreement between you and us for Gangway AIS: the Watch plans, the Data API, the reports, the account dashboard and the documentation (the "Service"). By opening an account or using a key you accept them.
2. Orders and payment
Our order process is conducted by our online reseller Paddle.com. Paddle.com is the Merchant of Record for all our orders. Paddle provides all customer service inquiries and handles returns.
Questions about the API itself, your account or your data come to us at hello@gangway.app.
Paddle takes the payment, charges VAT or sales tax where due and sends the invoice. Paddle's buyer terms (paddle.com/legal/checkout-buyer-terms) apply to the payment. These terms apply to the Service itself.
3. Businesses and individuals
The Service is open to businesses and to individuals. If you act for a company, you confirm you may bind it to these terms.
If you use the Service for purposes outside your trade, business or profession, you are a consumer. You then keep every right that consumer law gives you and that may not be excluded, including the right to withdraw described in our Refund Policy. Where these terms say "except where the law requires", they mean these rights.
4. What the Service is
The Service answers questions about vessels and ports from AIS messages that vessels broadcast and that our sources receive: last known positions, tracks, port calls, waiting times at anchor, events, port pictures, sea routes and depth. What each endpoint returns and what it costs in credits are described in the documentation.
- We receive AIS mainly from shore receivers: open public feeds, partner networks and volunteer stations. One official source adds reports from its own national satellites. We offer no worldwide satellite coverage. Where no receiver hears a vessel, we have no position for her.
- Each answer names the sources it used in
attribution. The list of sources is at/v1/sources. - Some answers are estimates or inferences, such as port calls, waiting times and events. They are labelled as such.
- Our recorded history starts on 7 October 2026.
Some sources allow their data in derived answers (port calls, statistics) but not as raw positions or tracks. Where a source's licence asks for it, we leave its raw positions out of the answers we give you.
The Service also includes watching vessels and ports from your dashboard or the API, within your plan's numbers:
- Watching: the vessels and ports you choose, with where each vessel is now and what our sources heard her do (anchored, all fast, sailed and similar), worked out from AIS like the other answers.
- Alerts and summaries: emails you can switch on or off: alerts when something you chose happens, a weekly summary and a morning line-up for watched ports. They are sent when our sources hear the event so an alert can be late or missing where reception is poor.
- Calendar feed: a private calendar address of expected arrivals at your watched ports and of your watched vessels. Expected times are ETAs as broadcast by the vessels, or where said worked out from distance and speed. ETAs change and can be wrong; they are not a promise of arrival.
5. Accounts and keys
- You sign in with your email address and a password. You can also ask for a sign-in link by email. You can switch on a two-step check: a code from an authenticator app, with recovery codes for when you do not have the app.
- Keep your password, your recovery codes and access to your email address safe: whoever has them can sign in.
- On the Free, Plus and Pro plans an account is for one person. Do not share your sign-in. More people can share an account only on Watch Custom, up to the number agreed.
- Your API keys are secret. Keep them on your servers, not in apps or web pages that others can read. You are responsible for all use made with your keys.
- If a key may have leaked, make a new one in the dashboard. The old one stops working at once.
- One account per business or person, unless we agree otherwise. Do not open extra accounts to get more free credits.
- Give us a true email address and keep it up to date. We write to it about your account and these terms.
6. Plans, credits and limits
- There are two kinds of plan: Watch plans (Plus, Pro and Custom) and Data API plans (Free, Plus, Pro and Scale). A free account has no Watch plan: it watches no vessels or ports. Each Data API plan has a number of credits a month, a number of requests a minute and a largest area per request. The current plans and their prices are shown on our plans page and in your dashboard.
- Each answer costs the credits stated in the documentation. Empty answers, empty reports and errors cost nothing.
- Credits count per calendar month (UTC). Unused credits end with the month: they do not carry over to the next month.
- Extra credits bought once (a top-up) are valid to the end of the calendar month in which you buy them. They do not carry over either.
- When your credits for the month are used up, the API answers
402until the next month or until you change plan. Above the speed limit it answers429. - Paid Watch and Data API plans renew each month or each year, as chosen at checkout, until you cancel. You can cancel at any time in two clicks: Move to Free in your dashboard, then confirm in the billing portal. You can also write to us. Your plan then stays active until the end of the period you paid for and does not renew.
- We do not refund part of a period, except where the law requires it.
- If we change a price, we tell you by email at least 30 days before it applies to your next renewal. You can cancel before then.
- Refunds follow our Refund Policy.
- If you host a receiver that sends to us, our Host Agreement applies as well. It covers the data your station sends and the free Watch plan you get while it sends.
7. Fair use
Use the Service at a pace a normal integration needs. Do not try to get around credits or limits, for example by spreading calls across several keys or accounts. Do not test the Service's security or put load on it beyond your limits without our written agreement.
8. What you may do with the answers
- Use them in your own work, systems and reports.
- Show them to your own users inside your own product or service, with the credits described in section 10.
- Keep copies as long as you need them for these purposes while your account is open.
9. What you may not do
- Pass on raw positions or tracks from the Service as data: as a feed, a file, a download, a database or an API, for money or for free.
- Use data from the Service to build, feed or improve a competing vessel-tracking, AIS or maritime data service.
- Resell, sublicense or share your access or your keys.
- Extract the Service in bulk, mirror it or rebuild its history from repeated calls.
- Use the Service to follow or watch private persons, for example the owners or crews of leisure craft.
- Remove or change timestamps, sources, credits or notices in the answers.
- Use the Service for anything unlawful, or if you are, or act for, a person targeted by sanctions of the European Union, France, the United Nations or the United States.
These limits come from the licences of our sources. Breaking them can cost us our access to the data.
10. Credits to our sources
Each answer carries the credits its sources ask for, in the attribution field (or the X-Attribution header for CSV and GPX). Wherever your users see data from the Service, show those credits clearly, with a link where a link is asked for. The sources and the credits they ask for include:
| Source | Credit to show |
|---|---|
| BarentsWatch (Norway) | Data delivered by BarentsWatch, with a link to barentswatch.no |
| Fintraffic (Finland) | Source: Fintraffic / digitraffic.fi, license CC 4.0 BY |
| Gangway volunteer stations | Gangway AIS (gangway.app) |
| EMODnet | EMODnet Bathymetry |
| OpenStreetMap | © OpenStreetMap contributors |
The attribution field in each answer is what counts. It names the sources that answer used.
11. Not for navigation
AIS data is sent by the vessels themselves. It can be late, missing, wrong or false. Coverage depends on where receivers are. Estimates and inferred events can be wrong.
The Service is not an aid to navigation. Do not use it for navigation, collision avoidance, safety of life, emergency response or any decision where an error or a delay could cause injury, death, harm to the environment or damage to property. Check anything important against an official source.
12. Reports
The printable reports (such as the AIS call timeline, the port call summary, vessel history, port and terminal, port waiting and transit reports) and the figures in them are made automatically from AIS data. They are data extracts. They are not expert opinion and no person reviews them before they are issued.
- We do not provide witness statements, expert reports or testimony about a report or the data in it.
- Each report carries a verification code. With it, anyone can check at ais.gangway.app/verify that we issued a report with that code, what kind of report it is, what it covers and when it was made.
- A report is not for navigation. It is not a basis for legal decisions on its own: weigh it with the other records of the voyage or the call.
- Our liability for a report is limited to the price paid for it. This sits within the overall limit in section 16.
13. Availability
We work to keep the Service running but we do not promise that it is always available, fast or free of errors. We may stop it for maintenance or repairs. A promise of uptime applies only if it is written in a signed Watch Custom or Data API Scale agreement.
We may change the Service, add or remove endpoints or sources or change how many credits an answer costs. If a change removes something you rely on in a paid plan, we tell you in advance where we can. You can then cancel.
14. Suspension and ending
- You can stop at any time: cancel your plan, then ask us to close your account.
- We may suspend a key or an account at once if we reasonably believe it breaks these terms, puts the Service or our sources at risk, or if the law requires it. Where we can, we tell you first and give you time to fix it.
- We may end a free account at any time. We may end a paid account with 30 days' notice. If we end a paid plan without a breach on your side, we refund the unused part of the period you paid for.
- Sections 9, 11, 12, 15, 16 and 18 survive the end of the agreement.
15. What belongs to whom
The Service, its software, documentation, design and the results we compute (tracks, port calls, events, statistics) belong to us or to our licensors. Data from our sources stays under their licences. These terms give you a right to use the Service as written here. They give you no other right.
16. Liability
- We are not liable for indirect loss, such as lost profit, lost business, lost data or decisions taken on the strength of the Service.
- Our liability for a single report is limited to the price paid for that report (section 12).
- Our total liability for everything arising from the Service in any twelve months is limited to the amounts you paid for the Service in those twelve months.
- Nothing in these terms limits liability for gross negligence, wilful misconduct, death or personal injury, or any liability that French law or the consumer law that protects you does not allow to be limited.
- If your use of the Service in breach of these terms leads to a claim against us, you cover the cost of that claim.
17. Personal data
How we handle the details of your account is described in our Privacy Notice.
18. Changes to these terms
We may change these terms. We publish the new version on this page with its date and tell paid customers by email at least 30 days before a change that affects them takes effect. If you do not agree, you can cancel before then. Using the Service after that date means you accept the new version.
19. Law and courts
These terms are governed by French law. Write to us first: most matters are settled that way. If not, the courts with jurisdiction over our registered office have exclusive jurisdiction.
If you are a consumer, you also keep the protection of the rules of the country where you live that may not be set aside by agreement. You may also bring a claim in the courts there.
